These photos represent my experiences and feelings of the inner city of Johannesburg while walking the streets.

Inspired by books like ‘The Restless Supermarket ‘ by Ivan Vladislavic and ‘Zoo City’ by Lauren Beukes, both set in Hillbrow, I also felt like exploring and documenting this part of Johannesburg.
My prejudiced mind was ready for a confrontation with decay, poverty, hardship and criminality. I was surprised and amazed by the beauty of Hillbrow, the unique buildings but especially the interesting, friendly and open people, trying to make a living on the busy streets of this once so thriving part of the city.

Sometimes,  really just once in a while, you can be completely amazed by the effort some people take to improve other people’s lives. These 4 Dutch clowns visited one whole week non-stop places with people who live in dire circumstances to try to bring a laugh on their faces. For more information: www.africlowns.nl
